São Bento is the <<advocate of bad things and unknown evils”>, his cult constituting an authentic religious therapy, which makes him a true miracle worker saint, author of amazing cures, above the merits of any doctor”.
Saint Benedict was born in Nursia in the year 480 Son of a noble and Christian family, he is sent to Rome to complete his studies.
Disappointed with the city’s lifestyle, he leaves for Mount Subiaco, where in a cave, for 3 years, he dedicates himself to reflection. He then left for Montecassino, where he founded a Monastery, from which other Monasteries radiated. He wrote a Rule for monks that later gave rise to various experiences such as the Order of Cluny, Cistercians, Camáldulos, Valombrosanos, etc. This Rule was also followed in the Iberian Peninsula by the military Order of Christ and that of Avis. The rule that St. Benedict composed can be said to be reflected in the famous phrase “Ora et Labora” – Pray and Work. After a life consecrated to God and others, performing wonders and miracles, he died on March 21, 547.
Proclaimed as “Father and Patron of Europe” and Patriarch of the Monks of the West, he attracts thousands of pilgrims to each sanctuary where he is venerated. His image, characterized by the figure of the crow, takes us back to one of the episodes in his life, the poisoned bread, which was offered to him as a gift by Florêncio, his disciple, and which the Saint knew to be poisoned. So he ordered the crow, which usually appeared there, to take him away, so that no one could find him. We often find images of St. Benedict with episcopal attributes (mitre, crosier, pectoral cross and ring) despite never having been a Bishop. These insignia appear, belatedly, attributed to the Benedictine and Cistercian Abbots.
